Whale Meat

Whale Meat served in Japan

A whale? Never knew that’s a thing…

Apparently controversial as I got to know yet according to Google still served in quite a few countries around the world including Iceland, Norway, Faroe Islands (Denmark), Alaska and Japan.

Japan has officially resumed whaling this summer, after more than 30 years long gap, hunting species considered abundant, with goverment set quotas to prevent overhunting.

…once it’s on the menu it’s a must!

Curious and excited we are as it lands in front of us…errr, how do we eat that? Take it with garlic and dip it in the sauce are the instructions from the waiter. So we did…

It is DELICIOUS!

I’ve been ticking off exotic meats as I go and whale meat has undeniably taken the top spot on my list. It must have been the most delicious steak I have ever had. No wonder it’s considered delicacy around here. Imagine super tender meat seared around the edges and dark red in the middle…sooo smooth! Served with raw garlic and soy sauce, with or without, really tasty!

If you’re a food adventurer and meat lover you shouldn’t miss this one out.

There are specialised whale bars in Tokyo and meat is also available in some supermarkets and fish markets. We happened to be in a restaurant that has whale meat as one of the items on the menu and we really enjoyed it.
