Rabbit Island

Okunoshima - Rabbit Island in Japan

Short overview of our day trip to Ōkunoshima from Hiroshima.

We arrived from Hiroshima at about 11am ready to hang out with rabbits and chill on the beach for couple of hours as the official Rabbit Island website suggests to have a swim while visiting.

What they don’t exactly advertise is the chemical factory and poison gas storage ruins that give the island slightly creepy vibe and left us with a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

Rabbits were super cute and very friendly, we were glad we came to see them and also seen the WWII left overs.

The whole island felt very abandoned, a bit of a ghost town that didn’t make us wanna chill on the beach as we couldn’t wait to get away fast enough, yet the ferries back to the land are not very frequent so even though we walked around the whole island and were ready to board by about 12.15 we had to wait for almost 2 hours for the next ferry back.

If you go, visit the ruins too, it might make you feel uncomfortable but it’s definitely worth it, bring rabbit food – we had some veggie sticks from 7/11, and check ferry times, an hour top two on the island should be more than enough.

Have fun! 😎
